Ensure effective and responsible management of the premises and appropriate instruction, training and supervision of those employees.
Ensure all such training is logged on each individuals training record.
Provide evidence of ongoing training, monitor and record on a regular basis the training received to include refresher training every six months of all checkout personnel whose job involves the sale of alcohol to the public.
Ensure use of suitable till prompts within the store checkout scanning system that identifies all alcoholic products to remind checkout personnel to check the age of the customer. Ensure at this stage if there are any doubts about the age of the customer, then the checkout operator knows he/she must refuse the sale.
Ensure that signage at the checkouts is in position at all times and clearly visible by the customer to act as a deterrent and remind them of the legal age at which alcohol can be purchased.
Ensure all relevant under age warnings signs are on display around the wines and spirits department particularly in front of the fruit based designer drinks, alco pops, spirit mixers and cider, warning would be under age purchasers that proof of age may be asked for at the checkouts.
Ensure the policy requiring the production of proof of age before sales of alcohol are made to any person suspected of being under the age of 18 years is fully implemented (Challenge 25).
Acceptance of accredited "Proof of Age" cards carrying a "PASS" hologram ie Citizen Card, Portman Prove it Card, Validate Passport, Photo Driving Licence, Military ID or any other locally or nationally approved form of identification.
Ensure all checkout staff are aware of the company refusal log and when it should be used.
